Welcome to Term 3

Welcome back to school everyone. I hope that you all had an enjoyable and relaxing break. We have a very busy term ahead of us but also very exciting as it is time for the Junior school to shine on stage in their production - Footprints Through Storyland.
This term our topic is Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. We are going to look closely at the environmental footprint we leave on Earth and how we can make a smaller one. We started the topic by burying 3 types of rubbish in the ground - plastic waste, paper waste and fruit/bread scraps. At the end of the term we are going to uncover the rubbish and see what has happened. Here are some photos and predictions that the children have made.

I think that the plastic waste will stay in the ground. - Jinhee
I think that the plastic waste will be eaten by the earth. - Jamie K
I think that the paper waste will rot. - Isabella M
I think that the paper waste will rot and get eaten by the worms. - Bella L
I think that half of the plastic waste will be there and half will not. - Jamie S
I think that the fruit/bread scraps will be eaten by the earth. - Isaac
I think that the fruit/bread scraps will get turned into compost. - Evie

It will be really interesting to see what has happened by the end of the term.

WEEK 7 2010

Did you know that this week is brain week? We have had a look at this really cool website which helps you to grow your brain!! Click on the Brain Week logo to go straight to the website and get started growing your brain!! Mrs Keeley suggested that we use our discovery zone password to start our brain week account so we can use it at school too.

On Wednesday we are going to a special talk called BOOSTER ROOSTER. It is all about child safety in cars. The council has given Room 15 a great height chart that has lots of information on it. Come and measure yourself against it to see if you should still be sitting in a booster seat.

This week in maths we have started looking at probability and learning about the language of probability. Click HERE to play a probability game.

Our big book this week is called Our Amazing Senses. Click HERE to go to a website where you can learn more about our senses and different parts of the body.

Colour wheels

We have been learning to make secondary colours by mixing primary colours. We are making our own colour wheels. This week we used red and yellow to mix and make red-orange.

A magical moment in Room 15.

What an amazing experience for all of us. We actually were able to watch this caterpillar transform into a gorgeous, sparkly, green chrysalis. It was so exciting to watch as the caterpillar wriggled itself until eventually it's skin dropped off, (into Mrs Keeley's hand) and left us with the chrysalis hanging on the plant. Click here find out some facts about monarch butterflies and caterpillars and here to watch a video of the transformation of a monarch caterpillar.

As big as a crocodile!

This week we have been reading a book all about zoo animals and we have been learning a lot of interesting facts about American crocodiles. We learned that a baby crocodile is born at about 23cm long and can grow to be a whopping 3.7m. We measured out 3.7m on the mat and discovered that it was about 3.5 children long. Have a look at Bella, Caiden and Jamie S head to toe making up the length of a fully grown American crocodile.

Having a ball!!

OnThursday we went out onto the field to learn some new soccer skills. We had a great time playing games like traffic lights and cat and mouse.
